This bill protects from public disclosure the personal information of members, supporters, volunteers, or donors of 501(c) organizations, which are non-profit organizations exempt from federal income tax. The bill prohibits public agencies from requiring 501(c) organizations to provide this personal information or from disclosing it without the express written permission of the individuals involved. It also prevents public agencies from requiring contractors to provide a list of 501(c) organizations they have supported. The bill includes exceptions for legal warrants or discovery in litigation where a compelling need is demonstrated. Individuals can bring civil actions for violations, with courts able to award litigation costs to the complainant.
